Installation Steps to create a dictionary for ICD-9 Codes using MS WORD 97

The following steps are the ones that I used to create the ICD-9 dictionary and hope they are clear enough for everyone to use.

The dictionary can be any file that is of a *.txt format and you simply save this file as a *.dic with explorer or file manager. It appears that you can have multiple words on the same line as long as a space is between the words.

10 easy steps:

  1. Copy the icd9 codes from the site http://www-informatics.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/icd9/refs.htm and imported into Excel.
  2. Delete all columns but the text (descriptions) column.
  3. Then while in Excel save using FILE - SAVE AS icd9.txt using (Text (OS/2 or MS-DOS) (*.txt)
  4. Then go to Explorer or File Manager and rename icd9.txt to icd9.dic (you just change the extension)
  5. Then using Explorer or File Manager save icd9.dic into directory c:\windows\msapps\proof\icd9.dic
  6. Open MSWORD 97 and click on Tools command button
  7. Click on the Spelling and Grammar command button
  8. Click on the Dictionaries button
  9. Click on Add
  10. Click on icd9.dic and OK

You are finished!

Option: You might want to clean up the text (descriptions) a little before saving as icd9.dic, you could open in MSWORD and replace quote signs, etc

 Good Luck! Julie Powell
